Multi-sport athlete Liz Brenner of the University of Oregon has been nominated a second year running for the prestigious James E. Sullivan Award. Brenner is one of 19 men and women nominated for recognition as the nation’s most outstanding amateur athlete.
As a sophomore, Brenner became a two-sport All-American in volleyball and javelin after she was selected as a second team AVCA All-American and finished eighth in the javelin at the NCAA Championships in 2013.
Brenner has played four sports in her athletic career at the UO. Last year, she was ranked ninth in the country for volleyball, logged the third-longest javelin mark in Oregon history and played 20 games for the Oregon women’s basketball team.
Three finalists for the Sullivan award will be named by March 28. Voting is open to the public and will account for a third of each athlete’s overall score. A winner will be announced April 11 at the Amateur Athletic Union national headquarters in Florida.
The Sullivan Award has been presented annually since 1930, and is based on character, leadership and sportsmanship.
