New dance exhibit twirls into Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

The art of the dance is on display at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in a new exhibit, “Strike a Pose.”

“Strike a Pose” is a gallery featuring images of a variety of dance styles, such as African, Indian, jazz, modern and ballet. The exhibit is on display until June 5.

The museum will also present a dance performance inspired by “Strike a Pose” on March 4 at noon. Students from the University of Oregon’s School of Music and Dance will perform choreography from Pearl Primus, a featured dancer in “Strike a Pose.”

The performance will be introduced by chair of the UO Department of Dance, Jenifer Craig. The performance is part of the museum’s new lunchtime lecture series, “The Hidden Histories of Art.”

Many of the images from the exhibit are from a gallery the art museum produced in 1963, called “Dance in Art,” which was a collection of photos of dancers and photographers working in the United States from 1940 to 1960.
