The College of Design is home to innovative, interdisciplinary and forward-thinking people and programs — as you’ll read in the latest Oregon Quarterly, available now.

Carrying the theme “Designing the Future,” the spring issue of the university magazine features standout students, faculty members and programs in the college: among them, a landscape architecture student whose work serves Oregon tribes, a trio of researchers committed to engaging Latinos and other underrepresented groups in the public process, and a collection of young alumni and students who are making waves in the art world.

You’ll also meet Jenny Lin, a multifaceted assistant professor of contemporary art, and learn more about diversity and research in the college from Dean Christoph Lindner and Erin Moore, head of the School of Architecture & Environment.

Research is also important to Willem Griffiths, a talented young scientist featured for his work in multiple areas, including the Biology and the Built Environment Center. Despite the deterioration of his eyesight due to a genetic condition — or, more accurately, because of it — the biology alumnus is determined to do all he can now to contribute to science.

The issue spotlights linguists who are working with Native Americans to revitalize indigenous languages, and also Calvin “Doc Throck” Throckmorton, whose intimidating presence on the football field belies his scholarly bearing in the classroom.

You’ll also find features on forensics expert Winsome Lee, a UO comedy club, and the young alumni behind Algotek, a startup that seeks nothing less than solving our problem with plastics pollution. And with a Duck Tale on architects C.B. Bettisworth and Johnpaul Jones, the issue ends where it started — with the College of Design and the power of collaboration to bring diverse groups together.
