Oregon Court of Appeals to hear environmental case at UO

The Oregon Court of Appeals will make its annual visit to the University of Oregon School of Law beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16.

The three-judge panel will hear three cases – including Chernaik v. Kitzhaber, which involves two Eugene middle-school students who are arguing for environmental reforms under the Public Trust Doctrine.

Other cases to be heard by the court are State of Oregon v. Tyler Mathew Tripp and Casey J. Deckard v. Diana L. Bunch.

The Court of Appeals panel will be made up of Presiding Judge David Schuman, Judge Erika Hadlock and Judge Joel DeVore. Judges Schuman and DeVore are alumni of the UO School of Law.

The Court of Appeals hears most appeals in Salem, but also hears cases in other locations throughout the state.

The UO program is designed to give students and others a first-hand opportunity to observe and learn about Oregon's judicial system.

The proceedings, in Room 175 at 1515 Agate St., are open to the public.
