The wait is over! The names of the recently-hatched chicks atop the Knight Law Center at the UO will bear the names Sabrina, Ruthy and Satou. The namesakes pay homage to UO Women’s Basketball players Sabrina Ionescu, Ruthy Hebard and Satou Sabally.
Like previous chicks, the baby osprey got their official names through an online naming campaign. The campaign started in May and concluded in early June with close to 150 name submissions from the public.
Rayna Jackson, a spokesperson for the UO School of Law, says that some of the names were very creative like Ospreyton Pritchard, Ospreyfontaine and Bird Bowerman. Other names like Huey, Dewey, and Louie she says seem to make an appearance every year.
“There was a great mix of submissions this year. Names ranged from campus buildings to Oregon mountains and rivers to Supreme Court justices,” Jackson said. “Naming of the chicks is something that people in the broader Eugene/Springfield community are invested in – so it’s exciting to finally reveal the names.”
Jackson notes the second-place names included the Kalapuya words for one, two and three - Tauna, Gemet, and Pshin. Third-place names were Agate, Onyx and Columbia – names in honor of UO campus buildings.
The public can stay updated on the osprey family by joining the Oregon Law Osprey Group, and by tuning into the Live Osprey Cam.
