The University of Oregon was named one of the top 20 “cool schools” in the Sierra Club’s annual ranking of America’s greenest colleges and universities.
The UO placed 17th on the list of schools “working hardest to protect the planet” for its commitment to green energy. In its rankings, the Sierra Club highlighted that the school sources an impressive amount of electricity through hydropower and wind and noted the institution’s commitment to sustainable commutes and recycling practices.
“Even the powerhouse athletics department has embraced sustainability, adopting sustainable purchasing policies and making sure that it’s easy for Ducks attending sports games to recycle,” said the Sierra Club in its 2016 rankings.
UO’s Office of Sustainability has launched a variety of projects and programs to help the school become a national leader in campus sustainability. Their efforts have enhanced the sustainability performance and environmental focus of facility operations, research and curriculum, athletics, student initiatives and community engagement.
