There’s so much going on with green transportation options in April and May, you may have to kick your car to the curb.
Sometimes the only way out of a long-term relationship is to move on. And moving on is exactly what Transportation Services has in mind in the coming weeks — the department is promoting commuter surveys, transportation challenges, bike lifestyles and more, all in the name of introducing you to healthy new partners for getting around.
Now, it’s possible all the upcoming attention on significant others may leave your car or truck feeling overheated. So use these explanations to try something new without causing your old get-around to blow a gasket.
1) “I’m not talking with other transportation options. I’m just answering a survey.”
Transportation Services is dropping a 10-minute survey on travel habits into your email this week. Complete it for a chance at Duck Store gift cards of $25 to $50.
2) “Everybody at work is getting together. I’m just going to grab a ride.”
Employees are encouraged to carpool, vanpool, take free transit and try other green transportation options during the Get There Commute Challenge, a friendly competition against other workplaces that runs April 13-26. Sign up with your UO email to automatically join the university team and then start logging commute trips — first place wins $300!
3) “Headed to the gym. Back in a bit.”
Want to work out free at the Student Recreation Center?
Get a chance at a fall membership by signing up at Get There Oregon and logging your eligible commute trips in May. You’ll also earn a stylish Cotopaxi hip pack.
4) “Can’t take you out for a spin right now. Have a Zoom meeting.”
Learn about May commute incentives and a new digital tool for getting to the Eugene campus without driving alone by signing up for the May 1 edition of FYI Fridays, a Human Resources information-sharing program. The meeting runs from 11 a.m. to noon on Zoom.
5) “In fact, Wednesdays through June won’t work for a drive. I’m in support sessions.”
Rachel Glaeser of Transportation Services offers personalized commute support and planning during drop-in Zoom sessions, noon to 1 p.m. Wednesdays, May 6-June 10.
6) “An old friend is rolling through in May and we’re going out on the town. Don’t wait up.”
Lane County Bike Month is back in May, with numerous events geared to connect you with the two-wheeled way of life. Get a tune-up through the EMU Bike Program and get ready to ride: Oakshire Brewing hosts a kick-off party April 30, the UO bike to campus day celebration follows May 15 and other events include a May 23 library to library ride and a May 29 film showing before the bike month finale, May 31.
Grab a passport at the kickoff party or participating shops, including the bike program office. As you attend events and visit local spots, collect a sticker — then turn in your passport at the end of the month for a chance at prizes.
Check out Transportation Services bike resources and keep an eye on WeBikeLane.org for updates and information. You’re also encouraged to host your own ride or event — submit it to WeBikeLane.org to be included in the Bike Month calendar.
