When big white tents go up on campus, it often signals big events such as Week of Welcome or commencement. But in this time of corona, two new tents on the Eugene campus signal safe spaces to eat and study outdoors.

The tents are located on the Women’s Memorial Quad between Johnson Hall and Gerlinger Hall, and on the southeast lawn of the Erb Memorial Union. Eating inside the EMU is currently prohibited, but many designated areas are available outside, including the new tents. Both are open to all UO students, faculty members and staff.

Tables and chairs are arranged for proper physical distancing for eating safely. The Women’s Memorial Quad tent has a sanitation station, and Wi-Fi equipment is coming soon.

Mask-wearing is required in either tent when not eating or when people are unable to maintain six feet of physical distance.

The tent on the Women’s Memorial Quad is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The EMU tent is open Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Several smaller tents have been set up around campus; however, those are for different uses other than a common space. Check with smaller tent sponsors before using or occupying those locations. The two large tents in the Women's Memorial Quad and EMU are for alternative common spaces.
