UO goes big, as in biggest ever, for the fall Career Fair

The UO will soon stage its largest career fair ever and for the first time will hold it in the Student Recreation Center, where more than 100 organizations will give students a chance to exercise their job-hunting muscle.

From noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, Ducks can look for internships and full-time jobs from among the 119 potential employers scheduled to take part. The event, sponsored by Fisher Investments, will be held in the rec center’s Midtown Courts area.

“We’re excited about the change in venue for this fair in that it allows us to bring more organizations to campus to hire our Ducks,” said Colleen Lewis, employer relations and events coordinator at the UO Career Center.

The fair will have something for all students, showcasing organizations such as Environment Oregon, Amazon, Toyota Motor Sales and the U.S. Department of State. Companies attending the fair are actively seeking Ducks for internships and full-time jobs after graduation — several will even be interviewing the next day on campus.

Even students who aren’t currently searching for a job or internship can benefit from attending the fair.

“The Career Fair is an excellent way for first- and second-year students to explore possible careers, learn more about organizations and start building meaningful relationships with employers,” said Kristi Lodge, assistant director of academic programs at the Career Center.

For the second year, the Career Center is offering a “backstage pass” for first-year students to explore the fair without all the pressure. The backstage pass includes insider details on how the fair works, a tour of the fair before it opens, a networking prep workshop to learn how to converse with employers, and a support system in what can be an intimidating environment.

First-year students can learn more and claim their backstage pass here.

“The key to success in attending the Career Fair is preparation,” said Courtney Ball, student engagement and strategic communications manager at the Career Center.

Students are encouraged to visit the Career Center to meet with an advisor or counselor, have their resumé reviewed, check out the companies that will be attending and practice networking. The Career Center partners with the Lundquist College of Business for Business Connect, a pre-fair event where students can meet employers in a more intimate setting and practice networking skills.

All students are welcome and encouraged to attend the fair regardless of major or year in school.
