Public Lecture: Stephen Kelly: "Joan Baez at Spring Hill: A Study of Intersecting Histories"

Stephen Kelly, Dye Family Professor Music Emeritus at Carleton College, will address the Student Forum in a free lecture open to the public. Fifty years ago this week, folk singer Joan Baez gave a concert at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., the day after she was present at civil rights demonstrations in Birmingham. Kelly will demonstrate the concert’s extraordinary significance when viewed from the intersection of multiple social, musical, institutional and personal histories.

Oregon String Quartet: The Beethoven Cycle, Concert 5

The acclaimed Oregon String Quartet continues in the performance cycle of all 17 of Beethoven's string quartets. Repertoire for this concert will feature the Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 18, No. 6; and the glorious Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 74, the "Harp." Student Dance Concert

The University of Oregon’s Department of Dance presents the annual spring student dance concert, produced and directed entirely by students in dance programs at the UO. Dance pieces will include HJ Kim's exploration on duplicity through a use of masks in "Two Face," Linnea Birdwell's comment the paradoxical nature of gender roles in "Unfamiliar World" and more. Public Lecture: Stephen Kelly: "The Medieval Monastery: Teaching and Learning"

A free public lecture by Stephen Kelly, Dye Family Professor Music, Emeritus at Carleton College. The UO School of Music and Dance has named Kelly a 2013 Robert M. Trotter Visiting Professor, a mark of distinction reserved for honored guest artists and scholars. Kelly will show and lead a discussion about a 22-minute video designed to better connect students with the institution of medieval monasticism by means of a visual representation of how the architecture reflected the social organization.

UO Honors Jazz Combos Concert

Flute Studio Event: "The Flute and Spoken Word"

Members of the University of Oregon flute studio of Molly Barth will perform works incorporating flute and spoken word in innovative and dynamic ways. Admission is a new or gently-used book or magazine; all materials will be donated to a local public library.

Chamber Music on Campus

Student chamber ensembles will give a free "Chamber Music on Campus" concert. Repertoire will include a Brahms Piano Trio, a Brahms String Sextet, the Klughardt Wind Quintet, and the Bach Cello Suite #3 arranged for solo marimba.

Refuge Trio Featuring John Hollenbeck, Drums; Theo Bleckman, Voice; and Gary Versace, Keyboards

Featuring the renowned John Hollenbeck on drums, Refuge Trio explores delicate and playful music with mystery and exuberance. Their voices have been essential in the ensembles of Laurie Anderson, Meredith Monk, Bob Brookmeyer, John Scofield, and Maria Schneider.
