The Office of International Affairs is leading the University of Oregon's efforts to express sympathy and offer support for those affected by Typhoon Haiyan, which hit the Philippines Nov. 8 and is believed to have killed more than 10,000 people across the archipelago.
“The Office of international Affairs is eager to work with any interested students and campus colleagues to funnel support in the right directions to assist the people of the Philippines,” said Dennis Galvan, the UO's vice provost for international affairs.
Galvan noted that the process of rebuilding will be a long one for the country's 9.5 million people – 600,000 of whom may have been displaced. But several aid agencies and others are helping to meet survivors' immediate needs, such as food, water and medicine.
Organizations that are deploying urgent relief efforts on the islands include:
-
World Food Programme (WFP)
-
GOOGLE has created a person finder for those affected by the storm.
-
UO's Kultura Pilipinas has begun its own efforts to support and help Haiyan victims. Connect and show your support for Kultura Filipina on FACEBOOK
