The “Journal of Environmental Law and Litigation” at the University of Oregon School of Law will delve into the delicate balance of energy policy and environmental policy during its annual symposium on Oct. 5.
About 2,800 new students from Oregon began classes at the University of Oregon this week, along with students from every state in the U.S. and from nearly 100 countries around the world.
Total enrollment is estimated at 24,000 – similar to last year's total, and part of a strategic decision to maintain quality of the educational experience for UO students.

Warm welcomes and drier-than-expected weather were the orders of the day Sept. 30 as UO and community leaders welcomed students back to neighborhoods near campus.
That buzz you feel is the energy of a new year starting today – Sept. 30 – at the University of Oregon.
UO officials and others are welcoming back students living off campus with the 2013 UO Community Welcome walk, which runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Leaders including UO President Michael Gottfredson, Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy and others will go door to door in near-campus neighborhoods to meet students, share tips on keeping them and their belongings safe and encourage them to be good neighbors.
For years, the university's parking and transportation services were housed with public safety, in Straub Hall facing 15th Avenue.
The two departments have split, and both have moved – Straub Hall is being renovated and will be used for academic purposes when it reopens.
UOPD moved its patrol and operations base to a station at 15th Avenue and Walnut Street in 2011. Parking and Transportation moved in June 2013, when the Straub remodel began.

Historical exhibits related to feminist research, teaching, activism and creativity are on display this fall at various university locations and the Eugene Airport to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the UO's Center for the Study of Women in Society.
The Oregon University System and the Service Employees International Union 503 reached tentative agreement on contract negotiations for OUS classified staff early Thursday morning.
The settlement, which covers a total of 4,300 employees on all seven OUS campuses and one branch campus, will now be taken by SEIU to its membership for a mail ratification vote. The union's notice of intent to strike on September 30 – the first day of the fall term for students – has been rescinded.
About 75 people showed up on Wednesday for an open house in the newly redesigned space on the west side of Johnson Hall's "garden level" for the Office of the Vice President for Equity and Inclusion.
Guests toured the offices, greeted new hires in the division and wished Vice President Yvette Alex-Assensoh and her staff well for the upcoming academic year.
