The UO Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics kicks off its winter/spring 2013 Public Affairs Speaker Series, "Governing a Polarized Republic: Is This Any Way to Run a Democracy?" with a roundtable discussion, Governing after the 2012 Election, at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30 in the Gerlinger Lounge.
The roundtable will feature Richard Ellis, Willamette University; Alison Gash, UO; Melissa Buis Michaux, Willamette University; and Dan Tichenor, UO.
A Gabonese delegation headed by education minister Séraphin Moundounga spent a full day at the University of Oregon on Monday and heard descriptions of potential research projects that could result from a new Gabon/Oregon Transnational Research Center on Environment and Development.
The 14-member group – on a U.S. State Department-arranged tour of Western universities, community colleges and vocational schools – took a UO campus tour, looked in on a biology lab, met with Gabonese students at the UO and participated in a reception Monday night at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.
World-renowned pianist Julian Martin will visit the UO School of Music and Dance to teach a master class from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Feb. 4 in Beall Concert Hall.
The public is invited to observe Martin working with piano students on a movement from Beethoven’s Sonata in D Major, Op. 28; Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in C minor, BWV 847; Schumann’s Abegg Variations, Op. 1; and one work from Albéniz’s Iberia, Book 2.
The class is part of the Nellie Tholen Fund Piano Master Class series. There is no charge to observe the class.

Chancellor George Pernsteiner announced today that he will resign from the Oregon University System, effective March 1. Pernsteiner will remain in his current role until that time, and will continue to contribute on a special assignment through March 31.
Pernsteiner’s continued service to the Oregon University System through March is intended to facilitate a successful leadership transition.
The University of Oregon Recycling Center kicked off the RecycleMania Civil War – a friendly competition with Oregon State University – on Jan. 20, and encourages the campus community to get involved.
The two schools will compete through Feb. 2 in order to determine which university can produce the highest per capita weight for recycling and compost combined. A trophy was created out of recycled materials by a UO student for the event, but currently resides with OSU after the school won the most recent RecycleMania Civil War.
Chief Caleen Sisk, traditional and spiritual leader of the Winnemem Wintu tribe of the McCloud River watershed in Northern California, will give a keynote speech during a salmon dinner celebration at the Many Nations Longhouse on Friday, Jan. 25. She has been visiting the University of Oregon campus since Wednesday.
The Friday dinner is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is free for students and the community.
The University of Oregon's Association of Fundraising Professionals student chapter is aiming to raise $3,000 for Special Olympics Oregon this year, by hosting a "Pre-Plunge Party" as part of its participation in the annual Eugene Polar Plunge.
The Pre-Plunge Party will be at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, at Cozmic, 199 W. 8th. Ave., in Eugene. The suggested donation for admission is $5.
The UO Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art looks back at the art of the 1960s and 1970s with “West of Center: Art and the Counterculture Experiment in America, 1965-1977,” on display Feb. 9 through April 28. The exhibition opens with a free public reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8.
University Theatre’s “Creature,” a play by Heidi Schreck, opens this weekend at the Hope Theatre, Miller Theatre Complex on the UO campus.
The play, which is directed by Tricia Rodley and is suitable for ages 13+, opens at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, and includes shows at the same time on Jan. 25, 26, 31, Feb. 1 and 2, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3.
