New pharmacy rules in effect for some medications in 2026

Public Employees’ Benefit Board medical insurance plans have some new prescription drug requirements for 2026. The new requirements affect Providence, Moda and Kaiser members. If you do not follow the new requirements, you may be responsible for the full cost of your maintenance medications.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Certain maintenance medications for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, depression and thyroid function are now required to be filled for 90 days at a time.
  • These medications need to be filled at a preferred pharmacy.
  • An approved mail-order pharmacy is a convenient way to do this, but you may also pick up your prescriptions from a preferred retail pharmacy.

And here’s what to do:

  1. Ask your provider to write a prescription for a 90-day supply of your maintenance medication.
  2. Submit the prescription to a mail-order or preferred retail pharmacy.

Refer to PEBB’s instructions to confirm the approved pharmacies for each insurance plan and detailed instructions for filling mail-order prescriptions.
