University of Oregon students, employees and community members can help improve campus safety by participating in the annual Night Safety Walk, Wednesday Nov. 8, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Participants meet at 5:30 p.m. in the Cedar and Spruce rooms in the Erb Memorial Union for an overview of past night safety projects, discussion of walking routes, and instructions for the evening. Pizza will be available at the start of the event.
From the EMU, teams walk the campus and use their mobile devices to drop pins on the Safety at Night map indicating where lighting, hardscaping and landscaping can be improved for nighttime safety. Participants return to the EMU for a short debrief and post-walk dessert. The entire event will wrap up by 7 p.m.
The Night Safety Walk is an opportunity for the UO community to work together to provide the university with feedback on campus areas that can be improved for nighttime safety. In addition to this annual event, the Safety at Night map app can be used year-round to share night safety issues. It also displays lit safety corridors and emergency call box locations across the Eugene campus.
The Night Safety Walk is hosted by the Associated Students of the University of Oregon, Campus Planning and Facilities Management, Office of the Dean of Students, UO Police Department, Safety and Risk Services, and Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration.
To help with planning, participants are encouraged to RSVP by Nov. 7.
