Vice Provost Wendy Larson back in Portland after research sabbatical in China and Singapore

What happens when a country with deep cultural roots becomes part of the global world? How do the citizens adjust to new influences, while maintaining ways of living that seem natural to them?

Wendy Larson, vice provost for Portland Programs and a professor of East Asian Languages, is back in Portland after a sabbatical year to conduct research for her fourth book, “Zhang Yimou: Globalization and Subject of Culture.”  The research focuses on Zhang Yimou, one of China’s most famous and controversial film directors.

Double Duck Richter joins International Academy of Trial Lawyers

One of Peter Richter's earliest memories is standing eye to eye with a Russian army guard dog. The year was 1947.

Richter was 3 and his family had just boarded a train heading to Germany, in hopes of escaping Russian occupation of Czechoslovakia. Richter and his mother had waited nervously in a hotel room for his father to pick them up with the forged papers allowing them to make their way west.

Newspaper reports that NCAA documents show that UO football values integrity

The UO public records office released additional documents to news media in response to requests for information about the athletics department inquiry.  The Register-Guard story includes:

“The University’s long-held belief about the core integrity of the program was confirmed,” the official response said. “The investigation showed that the Oregon football program values integrity, and that Oregon coaches did nothing to intentionally gain an unfair advantage.”

Summer is active with campus construction

The Straub Hall renovation, expansion of the Student Recreation Center and other University of Oregon construction projects are expected to impact streets and parking on campus this summer.

The Straub Hall project, which is underway, will result in limited access to 15th Avenue between Agate and University streets from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, through Aug. 18. Pedestrian traffic will be allowed on the south side of 15th – across from the construction site – as directed by flaggers.

Jill Baxter honored by UO for advancing math education

For many of us, the clearest memories of our grade-school math instruction were their mind-numbing, time-consuming repetitiveness. Odds 1-59 of long division, evens 2-40 of adding fractions. Show your work.

Not understanding what you were doing was its own punishment; it took forever and if you didn't get the first couple problems you probably weren't going to get the rest.
