Global Oregon hires director

Sheila Bong has been named Program Director of the Global Oregon Initiative to help lead the upcoming expansion of the program.

Global Oregon is a university-wide program that aims to enhance internationalization in the student experience and in research, and to improve the UO’s outreach to the state and the world. The program is deliberately cross-regional and interdisciplinary, drawing together UO expertise in every world region and from many academic disciplines.

Dohrn directs UO School of Law's nonprofit clinic

Beatrice Dohrn knows nonprofits. She has spent nearly her entire professional career engaged in public interest work — from Legal Aid in Harlem and the Bronx to nearly a decade at the groundbreaking Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund.

Now she's bringing her expertise, knowledge and commitment to the University of Oregon School of Law as the director of the Nonprofit Clinic

Sidewalk, north lane of 13th Avenue to close for construction

The north half of 13th Avenue and the sidewalk on the street's north side will be closed between Fenton and Friendly halls beginning Thursday (July 11) and continuing for about a month, as a fire line extension project gets underway.

Users of Fenton, Friendly, Johnson and Chapman halls are expected to be the most affected by the project. The project manager from UO Campus Operations expects periods of loud construction noise.

Andy Berglund named interim associate dean for UO Graduate School

University of Oregon molecular biologist Andy Berglund has been named an interim associate dean of the UO Graduate School, according to an announcement Monday from Kimberly Andrews Espy, dean of the Graduate School and vice president for the Office of Research, Innovation and Graduate Education.

Berglund's appointment will become effective in the middle of July. He succeeds Mia Tuan, an education studies professor at the UO, who was recently appointed acting dean of the College of Education.

Institutional boards bill heads for governor's desk

Legislation that authorizes an institutional governing board for the University of Oregon is on its way to the governor for his signature, after the Oregon House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly in favor of the bill on Saturday and the Senate concurred with the amended version Monday morning.

House members approved Senate Bill 270 with a vote of 44-15, three days after the Oregon Senate passed the bill with a 23-7 vote. Gov. John Kitzhaber – who has been a strong proponent of the legislation – is expected to sign it into law.

A couple minutes with ... Donelle Manton

The latest “A couple minutes with…” video interview features Donelle Manton, at program assistant in the UO Annual Giving Program … who also is the founder of Tres Islas Orphanage Fund in Mazatlan, Mexico.

Manton's day job is all about supporting the UO mission of education and access, she's accomplishing similar things in Mexico. Her goal is to assist children in the orphanage "from cradle through college," emphasizing education and the opportunities it creates.
