Internet2 honors Huter and Smith of UO's Network Startup Resource Center

Two leaders of the University of Oregon-based Network Startup Resource Center – Steven Huter and Dale Smith – have received the Internet2 President's Leadership Award for their efforts in building and expanding Internet infrastructure and training technicians around the world.

The award recognizes individuals from Internet2's membership for their exemplary service for the benefit of the national and global research and education community. Smith accepted the award during this week's Spring 2013 Internet2 Member Meeting in Arlington, Va.

Daughters and sons coming to campus April 25

Campus offices and classrooms will fill with the girls and boys of UO families April 25 as the university celebrates “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.”

Under the theme “Work in Progress,” nine- to 13-year-old girls and boys of UO families will follow parents through the day and participate in a variety of organized activities. The event is part of a national program to inspire girls and boys to begin thinking about their futures and introduce them to career opportunities.

Children will observe a parent's work, whether in a classroom, laboratory, studio or office.

CSWS noon talk: Karyn Lewis on women in STEM

Karyn Lewis, a doctoral candidate in the University of Oregon's Department of Psychology, will discuss her research on women in the traditionally male-dominated fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, in 330 Hendricks Hall.

Lewis’s talk, “When Hard Work Doesn’t Pay Off: Exploring Self-Perceptions to Understand the Underrepresentation of Women in STEM,” is based on her research that was funded by a grant from the Center for the Study of Women in Society in 2010.

Employee portraits at UO library May 7-8

The Image Services Center in the UO Knight Library will be taking professional headshots of UO faculty and staff who wish to participate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, and Wednesday, May 8, in Room 61 of the Knight Library.  

The $20 headshot fee can be paid for via departmental index. Participants will be e-mailed copies of their headshots one week after their portrait sessions.    

Veteran Job Fair is May 1 in Hillsboro

A Veteran Job Fair will be held May 1 at the Tuality Healthcare center in Hillsboro, with about 40 employers and 20 veteran resources.

Hundreds of veterans are expected to attend, participating in workshops, breakout sessions and interviews that provide an opportunity for them and their families.

Veteran representatives from WorkSource Oregon will attend and workshops will include career-related subjects such as resume writing, interviewing skills, dressing for success and professionalism.
