Lauren Charles named Oregon law assistant director of admissions

The University of Oregon School of Law recently named Lauren Charles to be assistant director of Admissions. She began her new position June 17.

Charles is a 2011 graduate of the law school. She earned her undergraduate degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University and received her master's degree in historic preservation from Pratt Institute in New York.

Industrial-strength recycling

Waste material: It may not seem glamorous, but finding sustainable ways to deal with it is one of the century's most pressing issues.

Bulk Handling Systems has taken on this challenge. The Eugene-based company provides innovative turnkey systems for large-scale recycling of industrial and municipal waste.

At the UO's SPRNG conference in Portland in May, UO president emeritus Dave Frohnmayer described Bulk Handling Systems as "one to watch."

UO police officers to expand services to campus immediately

The State Board of Higher Education granted permission at its June 21 meeting for the University of Oregon to equip its police officers with firearms. The board acted on the recommendation of UO President Michael Gottfredson, who reached the decision following a campus engagement process that considered input from many members of the campus community. In his recommendation, Gottfredson cited the safety and security of faculty, students, staff and the community as his primary consideration.
 

Photographs of Russian Orthodox cathedrals and churches on view at Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is presenting a photographic exhibit of Russian Orthodox cathedrals and churches from the 11th to the 20th centuries in the McKenzie Gallery.

The photographs, which will be on view through Aug. 11, the were taken during research trips by Professor Emeritus A. Dean McKenzie, who retired in 1988 from the University of Oregon’s Department of Art History.

McKenzie will lecture on 2,000 years of Russian Orthodox Church architecture during an event at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, at the museum.

David Woken hired as history/Latin American studies librarian

David Woken has been hired by UO Libraries as the as new history and Latin American studies librarian.

Woken will oversee development of collections and services to support the instructional and research needs of the Department of History and the interdisciplinary programs of Medieval Studies and Latin American Studies. He will also assist the library's Reference and Research Services Unit.

Alex-Assensoh's Chronicle op-ed about SCOTUS remand of Texas diversity case and need for "courageous dialogue"

An op-ed piece by Yvette Alex-Assensoh, the UO's vice president for equity inclusion, appears today in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

The column discusses the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to remand a University of Texas equal access case to a lower court, and the opportunity it raises to more effectively achieve the goal of a diverse student population.
