Honors College gets an overhaul

When the Robert D. Clark Honors College opened its doors in 1960 as a channel for challenging Oregon’s smartest students, the best and brightest were taught in the rather dim basement of Friendly Hall.

The oldest honors college in the country with a four-year curriculum, the Clark Honors College (CHC) bided in that basement for 18 years.  

New acquisitions open for Schnitzer Museum’s 80th anniversary celebration

The red “JSMA @ 80” symbol is your guide to new artwork at the Schnitzer museum.

Artwork acquired by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in the past five years will be on display throughout the museum’s galleries during its 80th anniversary celebration. On view beginning June 1, these new acquisitions will be identified with a red “JSMA @ 80” symbol.

UO student designers’ chairs make their New York City debut

Consumer Reports called it “one of the most inventive uses of laminate you might ever see.”

They were referring to UO product design student Katie Lee’s café chair. Judges for the "Wilsonart Challenges..." agreed, naming it the winner in the 2013 contest.

Lee and six other University of Oregon design students who were finalists in the student design competition had their chair designs displayed May 18 to 21 at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, North America’s showcase for contemporary design, at the Javitz Center in New York, New York, in Wilsonart’s booth.

EMU history documentary premieres June 6

In the early 1950s, the saying was “meet me at the SU” – a reference to the Erb Memorial Union.

That’s also the title of an upcoming documentary on the history of the facility: "Meet Me at the SU: A History of the Erb Memorial Union" premieres at 6 p.m. June 6, in the EMU Ballroom, free and open to the public.

Presented by the Division of Student Affairs and written and directed by Oregon journalism graduate Jonna Threlkeld, the film features interviews with Oregon alumni representing generations of students dating to 1945.

Chronicle of Higher Education praises UO's Sustainable Cities Initiative

The most recent issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education calls the UO’s Sustainable Cities Initiative “one of higher education's most successful and comprehensive service-learning programs.”

Chronicle sustainability reporter Scott Carlson visited the UO personally to speak with SCI co-founder Marc Schlossberg and other faculty involved in the multi-disciplinary program, which connects students with cities to create real-world solutions to real-world problems. Carlson also interviewed city staff who offered insight into the importance and impact of working with students.

Oregon Executive MBA alumni honored at CFO awards

Three alumni from the Oregon Executive MBA program were honored at the Portland Business Journal’s annual CFO Awards luncheon on May 16 at the Governor Hotel in Portland.

Karen Shepard of St. Charles Health Systems, Doug Shafer of iovation, Inc., and Mick Reynolds of Pacific Continental Bank were all finalists, with Doug and Karen taking top honors among the medium companies and nonprofits categories, respectively.

The annual awards recognize Portland-area business people for their financial acumen.
